What Is Fanfiction?

Definition of fan fiction and the Harry Potter phenomenon.

Fan fiction (ordinarily known equally fanfiction) is a loosely defined term for fiction about characters or settings, written by admirers of the original work. Fanfics are non commissioned by the possessor and creator and are very rarely published professionally. Most fan fiction writers assume that their readers accept knowledge of the catechism (original) universe in which their works are based. More than on Wikipedia...

Co-ordinate to some sources, fanfiction existed every bit far back as the 17th century, but it'due south becoming particularly popular these days when nosotros have so many forms of entertainment. The Harry Potter fanfiction miracle is especially impressive. There are so many fics written by the fans of the serial, that y'all could say J. K. Rowling awakened the generation of children not only to reading but creative writing as well!

Why Write Fanfiction?

A few things to consider

Why would y'all even write a fanfic? Some might say "it'south not like you are getting paid for information technology." It'southward true that you won't make whatever money from your fanfiction (and if you practice, that's probably illegal) just there are many other benefits, such equally improving your writing skills, stimulating your fantasy and giving your favorite story a "better" catastrophe or a spin-off you always wanted to see in the original work.

Let's non forgot the social aspect, besides. The Internet lets you lot publish your story instantly, getting a lot of readers to mail reviews and comments that will aid you improve. Plus, it feels great to become positive reviews from people saying that they loved your piece of work. Of grade, and then at that place's always the pressure from your fans to release the side by side chapter sooner. If this happens to you, just remember that you are writing the story for yourself first, and take as much time as you call back is needed (don't release half-broiled chapters just because your readers demand it). Run into it this way: if people are begging yous to write faster, that means your story is really skilful!

Writing fanfiction is not only fun, but can also be a great way to improve your skills.

Writing fanfiction is not only fun, but can as well be a neat way to improve your skills.

Tips For Writing Your Offset 1

Some bones advice for newbie fanfiction writers

  • Spelling and grammar are important. If you think those are your weak points, go someone to proof-read your story if possible ("beta" in fanfiction slang), or at least run a spell-checker. Finding a beta and letting him to read your story before releasing each chapter is always a good thought even if your spelling is great.
  • Try to understand the feelings and motives of the characters in the original work. Explain the changes they experience in your fic. A person can't get from a wuss to a badass in one twenty-four hours, simply speaking. In that location's nothing stopping your fantasy and getting crazy with the characters, simply in that example, people usually tag their stories as AU (Alternate Universe).
  • It's an excellent idea to accept a rough draft of the whole fic, or at least an outline, earlier starting to mail service chapters online.
  • Do not give in to the pressure of readers. Don't become discouraged past the negative comments, but pay attention to constructive criticism. Your readers might give you lot good ideas for improving the story, but always call back that you are the author.
  • Your story should make sense. Yes, you tin write whatever yous want - however, it'south usually a skillful idea to think of a nice plot, non to accept whatever perfect characters just taking revenge on everyone during the whole fic. That being said, a well-written crackfic tin can be quite fun!
  • Finally, the specifics of fanfiction aside, it's really like writing whatever other kind of story. You still need to have some writing skills (and there are tons of information online on how to better them). Fanfiction is really a adept way to showtime writing and should be much easier than creating an original work from scratch, because you lot already take characters and world created for you. All you take to practice is play effectually with them.

Read Fanfic on Your Kindle

Many of the websites listed hither offer an improved reading experience past allowing you to choose the font, reduce the column width, or darken the background. All the same nothing beats reading fanfiction on an e-ink screen of your Kindle or other ebook device. Here are some tools to help you lot do that:

  • FanFictionDownLoader supports a large number of sites. You tin use it directly from your browser (Google login required), or download a calibre plugin. Information technology can save fics in ePub, HTML, Mobi, and text formats. A list of most popular downloaded works lets you see what stories other people are enjoying.
  • FicSave is a website for downloading stories from FanFiction.net, FictionPress.com, and a couple others. One of its best features is sending the story direct to your Kindle via email. This way, if you have WiFi enabled, you don't need to bother connecting your device via USB to transfer the file.
  • FanFictionDownloader is a similarly-called, yet dissimilar software which is available as a standalone Windows programme as well as a web-based version for Kindle only. The Windows application is my personal favorite; it can output in 14 different formats, monitors your clipboard for copied story links, and can download just the chapters you selected instead of the whole matter. Then all you take to do is connect your e-reader via USB and upload the story.

Questions & Answers

Question: Tin can I write on a fanfiction site without an account?

Respond: Not on any fanfic site that I know of, I'm afraid.

Answer: ArchiveOfOurOwn lets you do that in MOBI, EPUB, PDF, and HTML formats hands.

I'm not familiar with other sites, distressing!

Question: Are there any websites that allow you to publish stories well-nigh real person fiction, in particular singers, and to post song lyrics if you credit them, then if you write the title of the song and the writer? I would like to publish some Demi Lovato stories, but I can't observe a website. I published them on Archive of our Own, merely are there other websites?

Answer: I believe LiveJournal has some RPF communities. I'k not enlightened of any others, and in any instance Annal of Our Ain is the largest site to allow them, and so you're doing well to post there.

Question: How exercise I request a specific fanfiction story?

Answer: You could mail service a prompt on reddit.com/r/FanFiction or some other community.

Thanks.

Z on May 07, 2017:

It actually depends, but Tumblr can be a peachy place to find fanfic if y'all know what you're looking for. The grammar and overall content is much better than some of the stuff I've seen on Fanfiction.internet or Wattpad.

SV on March 17, 2017:

Wattpad i have to say is very expert for people as a starting fanfic website. It is really easy to use and you lot can use it for more than than simply fan fiction. Information technology is likewise a swell way to get recongized and you can fifty-fifty win money for submitting a story, right now they are having a horror competttion and the prize is xx,000 dollars.

Jec_014 on January 26, 2017:

Fanfiction.internet is the largest for fanfiction, Wattpad is the easiest website to write on, and Quotev has extra thing you can practice (similar make quizzes) that you can't practice on Wattpad or Fanfiction.

Wattpad and quotev

M on October xx, 2016:

I am familiar with both fanfiction.net and AO3 (a.g.a. Archive of Our Own); and contrary to some of the other comments, I'd have to say fanfiction.net is better in two distinctive means:

1: Using a mobile device with the search role of AO3 is a relative nightmare. Sure, you lot get to use more terms at once; just their accessibility (and slight railroading) ensures you demand a larger screen but to sort through what you don't want.

2: Fanfiction.net only has more content as of posting this. I don't know if that will always truly modify but so far that's how things are.

And for anyone who wants to argue nigh quality: fanfiction.net and AO3 are about equal. That'southward right, both sites have people who don't know the first thing about writing (including myself). It'south just that fanfiction.net has more than content overall, so it looks worse. And while fanfiction.internet is supposed to non permit developed content, I'd argue at to the lowest degree a third of the stories contain lemons or other explicit developed content.

And so there you lot take it, try both and form your ain opinion. Just know this: For virtually authors on these sites, fan fiction is a phase lasting a few years at best. Yous will, at some signal, detect stories y'all like that won't ever exist finished. You lot accept been warned.

Oh, and I'll bank check some of those other mentioned websites: a large thank you to you, writer of this article.

Soquilii on October 17, 2016:

Fanfiction-dot-internet's quality is divebombing with their frequent glitches. I never idea I'd say this only AO3 is surpassing FFnet, both in quality of content and ease of posting/editing. I've been with FFnet many years but I prefer AO3 these days.

Madison on October 09, 2016:

Wattpad may not be the virtually pop website, just it is useful. A lot of writers even admit that they used to take an account it helps build writer grapheme. More than mutual people employ the app or website and its smashing to meet writers. You lot tin can utilize this app/website all over the world, from what I've seen. They have run across and greets with famous writers. I'm sure some of yous have heard of the fan fiction Louder the author has become very famous. Her story has gone way past the website and has been shared a lot. I dearest information technology personally because the app/website is non only used for fan fiction its used for regular stories too. It doesn't cost any money what so ever. They have competitions for recognitions of the stories you've written. I could say and so much more, but I have to finish XD All around Wattpad is likewise a great fan fiction website you should check it out. Wait me upwardly as well XD username:Madilove23

Absolutely visit Squidge's WWOMB [Wonderful World of Makebelieve]! This site never gets listed and damn well SHOULD exist. Is it kid-friendly? No, it is for adults who want to read the writing of other adults. Authors at WWOMB do not accept to 'dumb downwards' their stories to adjust anybody.

I have posted my piece of work in that location for 10 years and never have had whatever of my works censored. I encourage folks to visit and discover whole, new world of fanfic.

Amy on August 22, 2016:

Twisting the Hellmouth is missing. As well Skyhawke, Ficwad, Slashfanfiction & WWOMB. Specially WWOMB.

Khaos on Baronial x, 2016:

In terms of how easy y'all can navigate the websit wattpad trumps fanfiction.net and AO3 (I apply all 3 so I can say this) but in terms of content fanfiction.net and AO3 are meliorate because they have content that is specifically what the reader is looking for non fifty tonne of random story's like in wattpad and in terms of mature content AO3 is by far the all-time identify to become it

So in some cases yes wattpad is a better place so the other two (not always and it's meliorate if you lot want your story to be discovered past other more than frequently ) but it frequently lacks a substantial amount of results (and that'south why I'one thousand looking for a new fanfic website)

Soquilii on Nov 13, 2015:

Fanfiction.net is the best. I've been writing for 20+ years and never saw anything improve. AO3 is ok only don't look for a lot of feedback; those folks barely post kudos much less comments. Quotev is similar. Ficme and Ficwad are jokes. The others are not worth mentioning. Stick to Fanfiction.net for excellent statistics, a wide base of operations of readers and people who have the courtesy to comment on your hard work.

@anonymous: I find that the all-time site for fanfiction is Ao3 or archiveofourown. While it has a lot of new authors just like all the other websites, in my experience and compared to fanfiction.internet, the writers take constructive criticism much better and tend to take a wider more than detailed adjust of stories. I find a lot of Supernatural fics there, it'southward highly likely y'all'll notice the crossover you lot're looking for.

Vilja from Helsinki on August 07, 2012:

@SororPeregrina: I used to take a couple of stories up on ff.net and I learned to accept the comments with express mirth, especially the negative ones that were obviously trolling for attention. Simply yes, the worst role of ff.net are the commenters. I really had 1 person comment with "yay I honey this fic because I love this pairing, at present I'm going to read it" and then annotate with "I didn't like it afterward all". XD Don't say yous like information technology if you haven't read information technology notwithstanding! Another person commented with "I hate this!" and so came back the following solar day to say "I don't know if you got my outset comment but I still hate this!" Could they be more than obvious nigh their trolling?

By contrast, I've never been trolled on anything I posted on AO3.

SororPeregrina on August 03, 2012:

One thing I learned: cliques run rampant on these sites. Peculiarly on FF.Internet, NEVER post a fanfic story to a fandom where ane person believes she owns a particular graphic symbol and has a huge following that thinks the same. No thing how adept your story is, they will come down on yous like a ten-ton bedrock and tear you to bloody shreds. I institute this out the hard way, and information technology's worse than being reamed past the critics for the New York Times. Consequently, while I'll certainly read on fanfic sites (guilty pleasure!), for my ain extremely occasional forays into it, I'd rather post on my own blog.

The actual fanfiction expanse of harrypotterfanfiction is really prissy, merely the staff on the forum site are incredibly rude.

This was a bully list of resources, thank you lot!

As a note: I would definitely recommend Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet that you linked to in your Amazon widget. I read it for an essay at uni, and even though it'south a piffling dated, it was incredibly informative and a lot of fun!

I believe that Truthful Blood it is not regular vampire story similar the ones that we are already used to watchâ¦with the incommunicable love and the human daughter that falls for the vampire and has to go through a lot of obstacles to exist togetherâ¦. This is much more than that!!! Information technology is an exciting vampire story with stiff personality, which makes you lot believe in the real beingness of these evil creatures. It is a refreshing new view of the vampires evidence.
